Qatar Museums (QM) has announced permanent changes to the opening hours of its key cultural institutions, including extended opening hours every Thursday, and a one day closure per week. Qatar airways has been voted the world’s best airline at the 2024 world airline awards, the eighth time that the airline has scooped the airline of the year title in the 25-year history of the awards. The office of the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs in Qatar released Circular no. 13 for the year 2024 which outlines appropriate measures to ensure that employees of Ministries, other government agencies, and public bodies and institutions adhere to controls related to uniform and public appearance during work hours and while attending official events. Qatari male employees are to wear the traditional Qatari uniform (a thobe, a ghutra, and an egal), while non-Qatari employees shall dress up in a full formal dark-coloured suit, with a shirt and tie that matches the colour of the suit. Wearing the Qatari dress (bisht, thobe, and ghutra) when attending official occasions entails the following: For the summer period, the color of the bisht - when attending official occasions – is to be as follows: A - Morning period: white. B - Midday period: blonde. C- Evening period: black. The winter bisht can be worn from the first of December to the first of April. Qatari female employees are expected to wear the traditional Qatari dress (abaya and head covering) in an appropriate manner. Non-Qatari female employees should wear appropriate women’s work suits in a manner befitting the work environment. Short, tight clothing is prohibited, as are bright colors, and make-up must also be “appropriate.” Sport shoes are strictly prohibited unless in the case of a medical reason provided. The Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE) unveiled fresh curricula strategies for the academic year 2024-25, in line with the Third National Development Strategy. MoEHE's Assistant Undersecretary for Educational Affairs, Maha Al Ruwaili, said the new strategies seek to achieve an ideal balance between the academic, skill-based, social and psychological aspects of students according to their needs. She added the new plans stem from the commitment to providing education that meets the needs of students and enables them to acquire the skills and values that qualify them to face the challenges of the future. Set to cover educational stages from kindergarten to high schools, the new plans focus on 21st century skills, such as digital competence, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking. They also aim to keep pace with the best education global practices that promote students physical and mental health. KG students will be offered free reading classes as part of their fun meeting classes along with increased sports activity. For elementary schools, students will have the opportunity to acquire further linguistic and artistic skills along with life skills that develop their motivation to learn. For the preparatory school students, further focus will be put on Arabic and English reading and writing classes with the inclusion of topics that meet students interests and develop their skills. Meanwhile, secondary school students will be required to submit graduation projects based on research and creative skills, as well as volunteering hours to develop their sense of social responsibility. Also among the new plans for the next academic year, teaching hours for preparatory school students will continue until 1:30 pm, except for Thursdays, which end at 12:40 pm, while the school day for secondary schools goes until 1:30 pm. This June, Qatar National Library brings back its series about the world of historical manuscripts and launches the Children’s Summer Camp and Summer Reading Challenge 2024, among a lineup of attractions. The month’s events start on 5 June, when the Library hosts an online study day titled “Research Tools and Approaches in Manuscript and Documentary Studies”. The event is part of the Library’s ongoing series, "Manuscripts of the Qatar National Library," which was launched in 2020 to provide insights into the rich heritage preserved within its collections. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the differences between manuscripts and documents and learn how to leverage research tools to locate and access them. There will also be an introduction into how to read manuscripts. Social inclusion in Qatar will be the focus of a separate event on 5 June that brings together expert panelists from various private entities to discuss efforts to empower people with disabilities to access equal opportunities, network, and participate in social and community activities. On 6 June, Qatar Philharmonic Orchestra will take center stage, playing music from the soundtrack of the Bridgerton television series. On 12 June, the Library hosts its mother-oriented “Mommy to Be Speaker Series”. In its second instalment – “The Secret to your Baby's Sleep” – Farah Abu Reslan, a toddler intuitive sleep specialist, will discuss the implementation of a pre-sleep routine to help mothers organize their infant’s daily sleep schedule. She will also touch on children’s personality types according to their sensory behaviors and discuss different calming techniques. Later in the day, the Library will host a lecture on “The History of Archaeological Expeditions to Excavate Sites in Qatar.” The lecture will shed light on the Library’s collection of books about the expeditions to Qatar and the excavations they conducted. Ms. Noura Al-Humaidi, Head of the Survey and Research Section of Archaeology at Qatar Museums, will discuss the various expeditions and their significance. This week, Qatar will witness a “planetary parade” or when six of the eight planets in our solar system will line up – Saturn, Neptune, Mars, Uranus, Mercury and Jupiter. A free public event will be hosted on Tuesday, June 4, starting at 1am at Al Kharrara, allowing enthusiasts to witness this celestial phenomenon. Qatar-based astrophotographer and founder of Everester Observatory, Ajith Everester, said that the participants will be able to observe the night sky both with the naked eye and through telescopes focused on Saturn, Mars, and the Moon. “While the early morning timing on a weekday may not be ideal for everyone,” he added, “it’s a chance not to be missed.” Everester told The Peninsula that Saturn will be visible all week after midnight, with Neptune joining it shortly thereafter. Mars will appear around 2am, and in the pre-dawn hours, Uranus, Jupiter, and Mercury will rise on the eastern horizon. This makes Saturn and Mars the best candidates for viewing the planetary parade with or without a telescope. For those wondering about the best time to observe, any night this week should offer a good view. However, Everester advised heading to a dark location away from city lights, with a clear view to the east, on the morning of June 4. “The crescent moon, set to rise at 2:39am with a modest magnitude of 3.5%, will be a stunning sight just two days before the new moon. A waning crescent on June 4 will captivate observers. Look out for the Milky Way and passing satellites as well,” said Qatar-based amateur astronomer Navin Anand. Several locations in the country, such as Khor Al Adaid, Al Kharrara, Al Aamriya, and Galactic Bay, provide excellent vantage points away from city lights to observe the planetary parade. Planetary alignments occur when planets travel along their ecliptic orbits and appear aligned from Earth’s perspective. Such alignments, involving three to eight planets, are not uncommon, though five or six-planet alignments are considered significant. More planetary alignments are expected in the coming years, as outer planets, which move slowly in the sky, create numerous opportunities for these events. Another six-planet alignment will occur this August 28, Everester explained. This planetary alignment, or parade of planets, appears to place them in a straight line, an illusion created by our perspective. According to NASA, astronomers refer to the phenomenon when two or more planets come close together in the sky as a conjunction. An ‘alignment’ occurs when all the planets appear close to the sun in a straight line. To protect workers from the dangers of heat stress in the summer, the Ministry of Labour announced its decision to ban working in open spaces during day time. The Ministry stated that starting from June 1, 2024 to September 15, 2024, outdoor working will be banned from 10am to 3:30pm. The ban enforcement is as per the Ministerial Resolution No. 17 of 2021 regarding the necessary precautions to protect workers from the dangers of heat stress during summer.
