  • Four women set to make history by travelling around Qatar on foot

Source :By Alexandra Evangelista/ The Peninsula Online Ahead of the National Sports Day, "The Desert Roses" will attempt to make history as the first women to circumnavigate Qatar, on foot. Starting on Friday, the four female ultra-runners will begin camping by the roadside and take on the 500 kilometre distance by walking, jogging, and running around the periphery of the country in a period of five days (Feb 5-9). The Desert Roses, composed of Stephanie Innes-Smith and Isobel Bushell from the UK; Heather Lee from Canada; and Ross Ayuro from The Philippines, share a common passion for running. With a shared history on sporting activities and belonging to the same running community, the four women were able to establish a team that could try the record-breaking adventure in the country. The group’s goal does not simply end by completing the 500 kilometre distance. Much like the team's name, "The Desert Roses" also wants to highlight and encourage exploration in the country beyond Doha, its capital city. The challenge also serves a greater vision to inspire women and girls to engage in challenging, arduous outdoor activities. They also aim to raise the profile of female sporting competence in Qatar as well as to inspire amateur athletes to set ambitious and unconventional personal goals. In an interview with the Qabayan Radio, teacher and army reservist Stephanie Innes-Smith shared: "We certainly feel we're in a position where we're able to try and I think anyone can start small and build up and be committed to it." With two teachers in the same team, Isobel Bushell and Innes-Smith, their passion for sports and running also ties with their vision to lead the students they teach by setting as an example. Educational Psychologist Heather Lee and finance professional Ross Ayuro completes the team. "Our other message is to children, again you're never too young to start and you just get involved and get going. You never know, you might really like it," Innes-Smith added. Ahead of the journey, preparations and training are underway along with identifying inevitable challenges they might encounter such as food supply, weather conditions and the on-going pandemic. The quartet received overwhelming support from local sports communities, such as a Filipino cycling community and the Doha Bay Running Club (DBRC), who are willing to accompany the team and be of help along the journey. Bringing the community spirit ahead of the much-awaited Qatar National Sports Day on February 9, The Desert Roses have a few days to go to gear up and train for the historical record that could mark them as the first women to travel around Qatar, by foot. Also speaking to Qabayan Radio, Filipina expat Ayuro shared a short message to all amateur athletes and fellow runners ahead of the 500 kilometre challenge. "Do whatever you can with whatever you have and wherever we are, in line with Qatar's vision 2030, like spreading sporting awareness and get involved in physical activities," Ayuro concluded.ambitious and unconventional personal goals.

  • More than 30 weddings held in one day ahead of new COVID-19 restrictions

Several weddings are taking place on Saturday, the last day before new restrictions are scheduled to be enforced. Some 30 weddings are being held on Saturday, just one day before new COVID-19 restrictions are due to be imposed across the country, amid a concerning surge in infections. “Praise be to God, today’s list of weddings show more than 30 weddings. Congratulations,” Qatar Weddings, an account dedicated to announcing weddings in the country, said. This comes just days after a press conference concerning reimposition plans was held and confirmed new restrictions amid an increase in COVID-19 cases. Among the list of restrictions from the Supreme Committee for Crisis Management is one that targets weddings, stipulating no indoor or outdoor weddings are allowed to take place, with the exception of weddings held at home. These weddings will only allow a maximum of 10 people indoors and 20 people outdoors. Starting February 7, an application must be submitted in order to hold weddings. The Ministry of Interior’s (MoI) Public Relations Department Brigadier-General Abdullah Khalifa al-Muftah announced that the mobile app “Metrash 2” will soon provide feature a service that will allow the submission of these wedding applications. However, many are saying that the decision to not enforce these restrictions sooner is counterproductive. Head of Infectious Diseases at Hamad Medical Corporation Dr. Abdul Latif Al-Khal said that most infected cases were due to social gatherings, weddings, and events. One tweet said “unfortunately, all the decisions were implemented from 2/4, except for the weddings from 2/7, why is this when it is known that most cases were from weddings?” Another tweet read “everyone enjoy your last weekend before we plung [sic] into semi-lockdown after 30 weddings in one day.” As the virus mutates into different strains that may soon arrive, Qatar is now in a critical period where adherence to restrictions will determine whether it will battle the second wave or move into a partial lockdown. restrictions amid an increase in COVID-19 cases.

There are 66 cases of hospital admissions in the last 24 hours taking the total number of patients in the hospital to 570. 11 were admitted to intensive care in the last 24 hours, and so 62 people continue to receive medical attention in ICU. “Over the past month in Qatar we have seen a gradual and consistent increase in the number of new daily infections. Additionally, and of great concern, is the recent increase in both the number of people admitted to hospital with COVID-19 and the number of people admitted to ICU with COVID-19. The data over the next few days and week will tell us more, but these increases appear to be the early signs of a potential second wave in Qatar,” MoPh said. “For this reason, it is more important than ever that people adhere to preventive measures to cut off second wave before it gains momentum. If numbers of positive cases and hospital admissions continue to increase over the coming week or two, additional restrictions may need to be implemented across the country and we will return to some of the early restriction phases,” they added. What you can do With the recent increase in the number of COVID-19 cases in Qatar, it is important for everyone to play their role in controlling the virus by following precautionary measures: o    Adherence to physical distancing. o    Avoid close contact with others, crowded places and confined closed spaces where other people congregate. o    Wearing a face mask o    Washing hands regularly. Anyone suffering from COVID-19 symptoms should contact 16000 helpline immediately. This is important as the earlier the disease is detected the easier it will be to receive the right treatment and recover from it. Out of the 394 new cases, 341 are community cases and 53 from travellers returning from abroad. Till now 250 people succumbed to the virus in Qatar. The total number of positive Covid-19 cases recorded in Qatar is 153,690 and there are 6,681 active cases under treatment. 2,846 people were tested for the first time in the last 24 hours (9,527 tests in total) taking the total tests done so far to 1,422,102 tests.
