Check out Yayoi Kusama's stunning colourful sculptures at MIA Park!
This sculpture commemorates Qatar's strong relations with japan. The colourful patterns of the unique shapes cultivate wonder and curiosity.
Yayoi Kusama (b. Nagono, Japan, 1929) is one of the world's most celebrated and beloved artists. Her work has transcended two of the most important art movements of the second half of the twentieth century: Pop and Minimalism.
Her highly influential career spans paintings, performances, room-size presentations, outdoor sculptural installations, literary works, poetry, films, fashion, design and interventions within existing architectural structures, which allude at once to microscopic and macroscopic universes.
"My Soul Blooms Forever" is the largest outdoor exhibition to take place in the Gulf consisting of monumental sculptures and installations throughout
MIA Park, including recent work such as the giant Dancing Pumpkin (2020) and historic works such as Narcissus Garden (1966 - 2022) and Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees (2002 - 2022). With nine groupings of major artworks (including a signature INFINITY MIRRORED ROOM - DANCING LIGHTS THAT FLEW UP TO THE UNIVERSE, 2019, of mirrors and light), the exhibition offers an extraordinary opportunity to experience Kusama's unique vision and unparalleled creativity.
One of our favourites from the exhibition is Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees (2002/2022), which has transformed the date palms on either side of the path running along the corniche.
Other pieces to look out for include / Want to Fly to the Universe (2020), and Infinity Mirrored Room - Dancing Lights that Flew Up to the Universe (2019), a mirror-paneled room with LED lights at QM Gallery Al Riwaq.
Her Excellency Sheikha Al Mayassa bint Hamad bin
Khalifa Al Thani, Chairperson of Qatar Museums said, "The grounds of the Museum of Islamic Art have become a favourite outdoor gathering place in Doha, marked by an array of public artworks that range from playful to iconic.
"With these new installations by Yayoi Kusama - one of the world's most visionary artists - MIA Park has been magically transformed for the people we are welcoming from around the world for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022."
